kis se puchen hum ne kahan wo chehara-e-roshan dekha hai
mehfil mehfil dhundh chuke hain gulshan gulshan dekha hai

jis se lagayi aankh usi ko dil ka dushman dekha hai
rang-e-bahar-e-subah-e-gulistan kya dekhe wo diwana
jis ki nazar ne ek hi gul mein sara gulshan dekha hai
ahl-e-wafa ke khoon ke chinten dur tak udakar jati hain
mera tadapana dekhane wale apna bhi daman dekha hai?
aj unhen jo chahe samajh lo warna yahi ‘taskin’ hain jinhen
kal tak hum ne ku-e-butan mein khakbadaman dekha hai

What does the last she'er mean? This is what I think it means: She might be very beautiful and everyone adores her today, but I have seen her when she was not so, perhaps as a little child playing in the dirt (khak ba-daaman). Yes? If this is indeed what the poet meant, for me, it only heightens the pathos!
